Beard oil is not for the beard. It is for the skin under it, which is where a Michigan January is felt first and where a wiry, itchy beard usually starts. Most beard oil is a cheap carrier and a fragrance oil from the same catalog everyone else buys from. Ours is six plant oils, vitamin E to keep them, and three real essential oils. Nothing else goes in.

The scent is cedarwood, pine needle and a little vetiver, all of them real essential oils. It smells like a woodpile in winter, not a cologne counter. A few drops in the palm, worked in at the roots, then out through the length. One bottle lasts months, because the amount that actually helps is smaller than most people use.

What's in it

Fractionated coconut oil (MCT): Light, and sinks in.; Coconut oil with the heavy fats removed so it never goes solid in the bottle.
Jojoba oil: Closest plant match to skin's own oil.; The reason it soaks in instead of sitting on top.
High-oleic sunflower oil: Light conditioning.; A clean, neutral carrier.
Argan oil: Softens.; The one the barbers charge extra for.
Pumpkin seed oil: Conditions.; Rich and green, and heavier than it looks.
Castor oil: Adds a little body.; A few percent, for slip and shine.
Vitamin E oil (tocopherols): Helps the oils keep.; So the bottle stays fresh to the last drop.
Cedarwood essential oil: The base of the scent.; Dry, woody, quiet.
Pine needle essential oil: The top of the scent.; Fresh cut, and it fades first.
Vetiver essential oil: The floor under both.; Smoky and earthy, a drop at a time.
